Last week me and my lovely Mum went on a last minute course to learn Modern Hand Lettering. I came across the course by accident when googling to look at Calligraphy and Hand Lettering. Normally I find these day courses and they are always too far, so I was ecstatic when I seen this course was at The New Brewery Arts in Cirencester.
Considering the amount of times I go to Cirencester, I have never been in The New Brewery Arts. If you are ever in the area do go and check it out. You don’t need to be doing a course, you can just look at different craft items or go in their cafe, which is amazing! I had a sausage roll, these are well worth the money as all handmade and you get a genourous amount of salad and roasted vegetables. I will certainly be going to the cafe again next time out shopping.
The course was with the talented Lucia Leyfield. I was apprehensive about doing the course as 10-4 was a long time if I didn’t enjoy it, but the course was fabulous. Lucia is so nice and makes you feel at ease and doesn’t mind with any help you may need. The bunch of ladies on the course were also very friendly.
First we learnt about Lucia, then got going on some modern calligraphy. All tools are provided for the course so you don’t need to worry getting everything before. First we learnt how to dip the nib into the ink and different letting techniques, such as press down with down strokes. This has come in handy when doing letting now as I know what parts I want to shade as imagine how I wrote the letter, so will shade any down movements. We then had a go at writing different letter and words, Lucia would come round praising our work and helping when we got stuck.
We then learnt different lettering techniques and ways of tracing your work to change the layout. There was plenty of reference ideas to use from Lucia. We also had the chance to try other materials and pens, such as water brushes, brush pens and paint pens. Again Lucia was excellent showing us individually these skills and tips.
Then we had lunch, included in the course you get a card for money off in the cafe for lunch and unlimited tea and coffee. We had our lunch and me and mum had a quick wander into the art shop so mum could grab some materials as wanted to practice when home.
Then in the afternoon you could do what ever you liked and what ever still writing you wanted to do or learn. Mum made a beautiful ‘Happy Birthday’ card, some other ladies done cards too. I wanted to do a quote picture (never one to do something simple) with all different styles of writing. I chose a Roald Dahl quote that I love, Lucia helped me with different styles of lettering and how to choose the main words from the quote. I didn’t get to finish my own piece but I will make time soon (poorly kids have put me behind this week) as I want to frame it and put it by my desk at home.
The course was very relaxed and not regimental which I really enjoyed. Mum even really enjoyed it as she mainly went to keep me company. She has done some great pieces at home practising. I would thoroughly recommend going to one of their courses, I will certainly be again. Especially one of Lucia’s courses. Lucia also does a sketchbook club which looks amazing! I have a sketch book but am always stuck what to draw. Make sure you check Lucia’s Instagram for more. I have decided to make time and once a week do a page in my sketch book, this week it didn’t pan out as one teething baby and a poorly child off sick. But next week I will try my best.
Keep an eye on my Instagram for when I get round to trying some hand lettering to go with my Illustrations, and i will upload a picture of my finished quote when completed.
